A metal girder is suspended between two walls and positioned so the upper edge is the same height as the artist’s eyeline: 157 cm. This surface is covered with a 2-cm layer of earth from the First Reception Centre in Lampedusa, Italy’s southernmost island. Lampedusa is closer to the coast of Africa than Italy itself and is where thousands of migrants come ashore every year in an attempt to reach Europe.

Francesco Arena, Orizzonte, 2012-2017. Iron girder, earth. Site-specific. Ed. of 1 + 1 AP.
