Raffaella Cortese is pleased to present the first Italian show of the Czech artist Jitka Hanzlová.

The series Rokytník depicts the people, interiors and landscapes of the artist’s childhood village in Czech Republic, left when she emigrated to Germany. These small-size images are a  homeward journey and an intimate documentation of a life remembered, after years of exile. The series was recently exhibited at the Photographers’ Gallery in London, where it was shortlisted for the famous Citybank Private Bank Photography Prize.

In the main room of the gallery a new photographic project is shown, titled Female: this series of forty-five images is a portrait of different female identities, changed by generations and conditions. After going to her childhood feelings, the determined eye of the artist focuses now on representing today’s reality in a straight and clear way. These photographs in fact visualize women’s contradictions and expectations.
